Known as “a plus belle avenue du monde” or the most beautiful avenue in the world, the Avenue des Champs-Élysées is one of the most famous avenues in Paris, and probably the entire world.
Champs-Élysées is the French translation of Elysian Fields which, in Greek mythology refers to the place of the blessed. This avenue is filled with cafés, cinemas, luxury stores and beautiful trees making it a pleasure to walk down. The Champs-Élysées is especially beautiful at night when it is lit up. This 1.9-kilometre long avenue is 70 metres wide and stretches from East to West starting from the Place de la Concorde and ending at the Place Charles de Gaulle where the Arc de Triomphe is located.
At the lower end of the Champs-Élysées, near the Concorde Square, is the Jardin des Champs-Élysées which is a picturesque garden complete with fountains and amazing buildings like the Petit and Grand Palais. The Petit Palais has been the residence of the French Presidents since the year 1873.
This end of the Champs-Élysées also houses the Carré Marigny and the Théâtre Marigny. Further down the road are the cinemas, theatres, cafés and restaurants like the famous Fouquet’s. The Western end of the Champs-Élysées is dominated by the Arc de Triomphe which was built by Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate his victorious war campaigns.
The Champs-Elysées in Paris was once regarded as the bastion of class and fashion, but today it has become a tourist hotspot and popular for Paris apartments for holidays and has many fast food chains, airline offices, banks, malls and cinemas.
